A photograph of Darrell Hill

Darrell L. Hill

I was born Darrell Hill and have remained so to this day. To be exact – I was born Darrell Lynn Hill. I’ve always wondered about my parent’s decision to use double letters (4) and repeated “L” sounds (3) when naming me. But overall it’s a good name.

When I entered Lowell State College (now part of the University of Massachusetts), I started playing with words. I went into the English program because I had no idea what else to do. Much to my surprise, I left loving the beauty and power of the English language. I earned a degree in English and Secondary Education.

Fuller Theological Seminary and Pepperdine University each granted me hard-earned master’s degrees (theology and psychology).  I worked in both disciplines and felt successful in each, but I always returned to my first interest: educating and writing.

Armed with more degrees than were necessary, I sought and found employment on two coasts. In Los Angeles, I developed curriculum, taught English to children and adults, and served as a middle school principal. The same school hired me twice. In Raleigh, I became a licensed psychologist and worked in the North Carolina prisons. In my “spare time”, I independently conducted seminars for businesses in the Research Triangle Park including many Fortune 500 companies.

I’ve organized websites, written content for them, and publicized their existence. I’ve created email newsletters and successful social media accounts. I’ve written policy manuals, action plans, and contributed to school accreditation reports. I have written sermons and speeches. In other words, I’m comfortable around words, research, selling, and informing.

I’ve always said, “You’re either getting better, or you’re getting worse.” In that spirit, I have my work reviewed by other writers in workshops regularly. It’s important to me to keep the skills sharp.

Stretching the capabilities of the Internet and social media is one of my hobbies, and I am easily described as an early adopter. My social Twitter account has more than 23,000 followers and my new business account has almost 1300 followers. My business Facebook Fan Page has over 750 likes.  It’s all about the right content.
